General Convention 2006 is over, and there is no doubt that any forward movement was overshadowed by the setback we experienced. In an unprecedented turnabout vote, under duress and threats of schism from the Communion, our Presiding Bishop and Presiding Bishop-elect put enormous pressure on the House of Bishops and the House of Deputies to pass B033 -- effectively trading the full inclusion of all the baptized in the Body of Christ for the full inclusion of all the bishops in the next Lambeth Conference.

We understand -- indeed, we share -- the deep hurt, grief, anger, despair, and sadness these actions have caused in our community. We understand there are those who just cannot wait any longer for this church to stand behind its commitment to the full and equal claim it has promised the gay and lesbian baptized since 1976 and who must move on. We grieve over that.

We believe that now, more than ever, it is critical that the leaders of our church hear their stories -- and to hear as well the stories of gay and lesbian Episcopalians committed to the mission and ministry of this church.

We must make our voices heard -- together. Our voices, our witness.

Together we will ask them to reject the false premise that we must choose between unity and justice when we know that neither is expendable.
